Therapeutic pool exercises

Exercise in Water Guided by a Physiotherapist

The Rehabilitation Centre at West Tallinn Central Hospital offers aquatic exercise led by a physiotherapist.

Water supports the body and makes movement easier, reducing the load on the joints and spine. Therapeutic exercise in the pool helps maintain and improve mobility, balance and endurance.

Who Is Aquatic Exercise Suitable For?

Aquatic therapy involves exercises performed in water, making use of the natural properties of buoyancy and resistance. It is suitable for people of all ages and fitness levels. In addition to supporting general health and well-being, it can be particularly beneficial for those living with medical conditions.

Aquatic therapy is especially helpful for older adults and for individuals with musculoskeletal conditions or obesity, where exercising on land may be difficult. The buoyancy of water reduces strain on the spine and joints, making movement easier and less painful. At the same time, the natural resistance of water helps strengthen muscles and improve balance, ensuring a safe but effective workout.

The aim of aquatic therapy is to maintain and improve physical and mental well-being, enhance functional ability, and reduce stress.

How Does Aquatic Exercise Support Health?

Therapeutic exercise aims to maintain and improve physical capacity and support wellbeing. Regular aquatic exercise helps:

  • maintain and improve joint mobility;
  • train muscles;
  • build endurance;
  • improve balance and movement coordination;
  • support respiratory function and circulation;
  • promote relaxation and reduce stress.

What Happens During a Pool Session?

Equipment includes pool noodles, aquatic dumbbells, swimming boards and rails attached to the pool walls.
