Where to seek help?

Your GP or the Emergency Department?

If you develop an unexpected health problem, it can sometimes be difficult to know where to turn for help. Your GP (family doctor) or practice nurse at your local medical centre can provide the necessary first-line care for most health concerns.

Hospital Emergency Departments provide urgent medical care for serious conditions, i.e., situations where a delay in treatment could lead to death or permanent harm.

Compared with the Emergency Department, where waiting times for self-presenting patients can exceed four hours, appointments with your GP or practice nurse can be scheduled in advance. A visit to your GP also allows time to discuss your condition in more detail, including prevention and long-term management. Emergency medicine focuses on the rapid diagnosis and initiation of treatment of a patient in a serious condition.
