Research at West Tallinn Central Hospital
Research and science
At West Tallinn Central Hospital, all research activities are coordinated by the Training and Development Department.
Research is defined as any activity aimed at generating new knowledge or insights. This process involves the systematic collection and analysis of data on specific topics, followed by the rigorous interpretation of results. In accordance with our hospital’s internal procedures, this also encompasses all forms of clinical research and trials.

How to conduct research at West Tallinn Central Hospital
To conduct research at West Tallinn Central Hospital, the Lead Investigator must submit a formal application to the hospital. To obtain the application form, please contact the Training and Development Department by email: uurimistoo@keskhaigla.ee. Before submitting the application, a contact person at West Tallinn Central Hospital must be appointed to facilitate the study. This person is responsible for ensuring that the research is conducted correctly within the hospital. If necessary, the Lead Investigator may contact the Training and Development Department for assistance in identifying a suitable contact person.
The research application, together with all supporting documents — such as Ethics Committee approval for human research, informed consent forms, questionnaires, interview questions, and descriptions of planned clinical tests — should be submitted to uurimistoo@keskhaigla.ee.
How are research applications processed
If the application is completed correctly, a member of the Training and Development Department at West Tallinn Central Hospital submits it to the Research Evaluation Committee for review. Applications and supporting documents are assessed by the Committee within up to two months, and a decision is made to approve or reject the application.
The Research Evaluation Committee may request additional information or suggest supplementary data if necessary. The Committee evaluates the study content, feasibility, compliance of participants and investigators with requirements, funding arrangements (if applicable), and the availability of resources needed to carry out the study.
How research decisions are communicated
A member of the Training and Development Department will inform the Lead Investigator of the Committee's decision within three working days of the decision being made.
If the application is approved, the Lead Investigator will receive a copy of the application signed by the Chair of the Committee. This document serves as formal authorisation to begin the research process within the hospital. If the application is rejected, the Lead Investigator will be notified of the Committee's decision, including a statement of the reasons for the rejection.
What happens after the study is completed
Upon completion of the study, the Lead Investigator must submit a summary of the findings and, if applicable, the final research paper to the Training and Development Department.
The Training and Development Department is responsible for handling any complaints and forwarding them to the Research Evaluation Committee for review.
