Baby and Toddler Swimming

Swimming to Support Your Child’s Development

Babies and toddlers take part in swimming sessions with their parents, guided by a physiotherapist. By exploring different body positions and movements in the water, children develop body awareness, balance and coordination of their arm and leg movements.

How Do the Swimming Sessions Work?

Baby and toddler swimming takes place in group sessions, with each child accompanied by a parent. Groups are organised by age, and each session lasts 30 minutes.

A physiotherapist guides exercises in the water using different body positions and movements. Children experience moving on their backs, tummies and sides, in both horizontal and upright positions.

How Does Swimming Support Your Child’s Development?

Swimming sessions led by a physiotherapist help babies and toddlers practise coordinating their arm and leg movements and develop balance. Taking part together in the water also supports the bond between parent and child.

Swimming supports children’s physical, mental and emotional development:

  • develops arm and leg movements and coordination;
  • develops balance;
  • strengthens weak muscles and relaxes tense muscles;
  • helps children learn to roll over and crawl earlier;
  • supports the development of heart and respiratory function;
  • strengthens the bond with a parent;
  • improves concentration;
  • helps children socialise and make friends more easily;
  • provides physical activity, calms children and supports better sleep.
