After childbirth

Information for the postpartum period

The postpartum period is an important time for both mother and newborn. We provide comprehensive information and support to help you adapt better to this new stage of life.

Postpartum recovery

The postpartum period lasts 6-8 weeks. During this time, your body recovers from pregnancy and childbirth. The uterus recedes, the birth wound heals, and the hormonal balance is restored. Postpartum discharge, known as lochia, usually lasts 4-6 weeks.

Postpartum visit

A postpartum check-up is carried out 6-8 weeks after delivery.

To book a visit, call 666 5588.

During the visit:

  • Your health and recovery will be assessed
  • Contraception options will be discussed
  • A gynaecological examination may be performed if necessary
  • You will have the opportunity to ask any questions you may have

Postpartum depression

Postpartum depression can occur at any time during the first year after giving birth.

Symptoms may include:

  • Mood swings
  • Sadness and tearfulness
  • Anxiety and fear
  • Sleep disorders
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Changes in appetite

If you notice these symptoms, please speak to your midwife or doctor. You can also contact a psychologist for help.

Breast milk and breastfeeding

Breast milk is the best food for a newborn. It contains all the necessary nutrients and helps protect the baby from illness.

Breastfeeding:

  • Strengthens the bond between mother and child
  • Is convenient and free
  • Helps the mother recover faster
  • Reduces the risk of breast and ovarian cancer

If you have problems with breastfeeding, speak to a breastfeeding consultant.

Newborn care

A newborn baby needs a lot of care and attention.

Important topics include:

  • Umbilical care
  • Correct swaddling technique
  • Bathing
  • Appropriate feeding patterns
  • Safe sleeping position and environment

Feel free to contact your midwife if you have any questions.
