What is physiotherapy?
Physiotherapy is part of rehabilitation. It aims to restore, maintain and improve a person’s mobility and ability to carry out daily activities, supporting independence in everyday life. Physiotherapy uses therapeutic exercises, movement therapy and other physiotherapy techniques tailored to the patient’s needs and health.

When is physiotherapy used?
Physiotherapy is used to restore, maintain and improve mobility and physical function. It may help after an injury or surgery, with muscle and joint problems, pain, restricted mobility and various neurological conditions. Physiotherapy also helps prevent health problems and supports independence in everyday life.
What does a physiotherapist do?
Physiotherapy is provided by a physiotherapist — a specially trained rehabilitation professional who:
- Assesses joint mobility, muscle strength and flexibility, posture, gait and other aspects of physical function to identify the patient’s problems
- Develops a treatment plan and sets goals
- Teaches the patient exercises suited to their condition
- Monitors progress and adjusts the treatment plan when necessary
- Evaluates the treatment process and its outcomes
- Provides advice on preventing and managing health problems
You can be referred to a physiotherapist by your family doctor, a rehabilitation physician or another specialist. You can also pay for the service yourself.
