How to support a loved one
- Listen carefully and without judgement. Avoid pressing for details—they may not feel ready to share everything.
- Avoid asking “why” questions, such as “Why did you go there?” or “Why were you drinking?”
- Respect their decisions, including whether or not to contact the police.
- Be patient. Avoid suggesting that they should “move on” or forget what happened.
- Show that you believe and trust them.
- Allow them to express their emotions, including crying or anger, even if this feels difficult for you.
