Family rooms in neonatal intensive care
Like all newborns, unwell babies need close contact and care from their parents from the very beginning. It is equally important for parents to be present, helping their baby recover and adjust.
With this in mind, family-centred intensive care rooms have been established on the 4th floor of the neonatal unit. These rooms are designed for babies who require closer monitoring and treatment after birth and are equipped with all necessary medical equipment to support and monitor the baby’s condition.
A pioneer in family-centred intensive care
The Women's Health Clinic at West Tallinn Central Hospital was the first maternity hospital in Estonia to introduce family rooms, allowing healthy newborns to stay with both parents from birth. 24 years later, in 2017, it also became the first hospital in Estonia to offer the same opportunity for babies requiring intensive care.
Research shows that continuous parental presence and closeness have a positive impact on the baby. Families learn to better understand and respond to their baby’s needs, which can reduce the need for certain medical procedures while improving overall outcomes. At the same time, it strengthens the bond between parents and child.
We support the principles of family-centred care, based on current evidence and clinical guidelines.
