What is endometriosis?
Endometriosis is a chronic, hormone-dependent condition that mostly affects women of reproductive age. It occurs when tissue similar to the lining of the uterus (the endometrium) grows outside the uterus. Symptoms may include menstrual irregularities, chronic pelvic pain, pain during sexual intercourse, pain when opening the bowels or passing urine, and gastrointestinal symptoms.
Endometriosis lesions are most commonly found on the ovaries, within the muscle of the uterus, on the peritoneum (the lining of the abdominal cavity), and on the surface of the bowel and bladder, although they may occur elsewhere. Under the influence of cyclic hormonal changes, these areas can grow and bleed, leading to inflammation and damage to surrounding tissues.
Research into the causes of endometriosis is ongoing. It is possible that several factors contribute to the development of the condition. Diagnosis can be challenging because symptoms vary widely in women. In some cases, it is discovered incidentally through surgery.
If you suspect you may have endometriosis, it is important to seek medical advice. Although endometriosis cannot currently be cured, symptoms can often be managed with medication and, in some cases, surgery.
Appointments and examinations
You do not need a referral to attend the Endometriosis Clinic. You are welcome to contact us if you have concerns, on the recommendation of your GP or specialist, for a second opinion, or to review your current treatment plan. To attend an appointment, please book in advance. At your appointment, the gynaecologist will conduct a clinical examination and an ultrasound scan as part of the initial assessment. If required, you may be referred for further investigations, such as an MRI scan or bowel examination (coloscopy).
Treatment
Following your examinations, the doctor will develop an individualised treatment plan. Depending on your condition, this may include medication or surgical treatment. If surgery is required, laparoscopic operations of varying complexity can be performed in our Gynaecology Department.
