Optometrist
If you are experiencing vision problems, it is not always necessary to see an ophthalmologist immediately. An optometrist can often be consulted first. An optometrist is a specialist who examines vision and primarily prescribes and updates glasses prescriptions, as well as providing advice. An ophthalmologist, by contrast, specialises in the diagnosis and treatment of all eye diseases.
A doctor's referral is not required for a private (self-funded) appointment with an optometrist.
Appointments are available from the age of 16 for anyone wishing to have their eyesight tested or update their glasses prescription. We recommend that you bring your current glasses and, if available, your previous prescription. This helps assess whether your vision has changed.
Appointments with an optometrist can be booked in person at polyclinics/health centres or by calling 626 1314.
