In the outpatient setting (at the health centre), we treat patients with chronic pain conditions such as back and joint pain, cancer-related pain, and other long-term pain disorders. In the inpatient setting (hospital), treatment most often focuses on acute pain. In some cases, chronic pain must also be dealt with in the hospital, particularly if it was present before hospitalisation.
Patients are referred to us by their GP or specialist, and some are referred from the Emergency Department. For hospital inpatients, we provide perioperative pain management - before and after surgery, and, if necessary, during surgery. We aim to allow the patient to undergo treatment without pain. Effective pain management may involve a multidisciplinary approach, including input from psychologists, rehabilitation specialists, and other healthcare professionals.
